The American Theatre of Actors is gearing up for a busy “back-to-school” season – and all the learning is happening on the stage this year! Including six incredible and unique productions between now and the end of October, the fall lineup is nothing short of impressive! The American Theatre of Actors was founded in 1976 with the mission of empowering and uplifting new theatre writers, directors, and actors. Nestled in the heart of the NYC theatre scene, this theatre has seen decades of continued success as artists and audiences alike flock to them for their guarantee of creativity, originality, and passion. James James Jennings has remained committed to ATA’s mission in the nearly five decades since its founding. As a result, a number of major successes have come straight from the ATA stage! Theatre lovers of all kinds will have something to enjoy this fall; from sci-fi adventures to tasteful revisitings of racial and historical events, this fall ATA has it all! First on the call sheet, opening TOMORROW is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s: The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, a New Musical! This musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 comic novella is delivered through catchy, golden-age style tunes. Director, John Kickoc, brings a wealth of wisdom to this production, perfectly guiding the audience through timeline shifts. This satire is being hailed as edgy and captivating, and with ATA’s elite casting, you will surely be wow-ed! Running Sept. 13th – Sept. 29th in the Sargent Theatre: Tickets are available now! 

Opening shortly after is the turbulent journey of Asteroid B-612! This adult-only play takes the audience through a cosmic journey as playwright and lead actor, Roman Freud, explores existential questions, both mythical and mundane. Alongside director, Eduard Tolokonnikov, this show delivers a poetic, introspective, and humorous night! Running Sept. 19th – Sept. 29th in the Backman Theatre: Click here for Asteroid B-612 Tickets! 

We then take a turn towards the classics with the weekend run of Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind. This production presents a compelling tale of marital abuse that leaves a lasting impact on the extended family. This deep look at family dynamics, conflict, love, trauma, and more is presented by Director, Luke Wisniewski and Assistant Directors Paris Allen and Sabrina Carlier. 

Running from October 10th – October 13th in the Cullum Theatre, you can get your tickets now!The following week brings us a double feature, the first being Laurance Holder’s new work, Zora! Set in 1920’s Harlem, Zora! is the story of the renowned Zora Neale Hurston, African American writer, poet, and anthropologist. Her remarkable work was a precursor to the beginnings of the Harlem Renaissance, and Director Greg Freelon promises perfect delivery. Tickets are available for this one-woman show now! Come see Zora, a Play by Laurence Holder, between October 16th and October 20th in the Sargent Theatre! 

Last, but certainly not least, is Anne L. Thompson-Scretching’s, Resurrection. Anne, founder of Shining Star Productions, is passionate about using theatre as a true form of expression, giving power to unheard voices. This show tells the story of the Black Wall Street Massacre of 1921 from the perspective of the community members.
