The compass is pointing towards Boston this week as Gary Sohmers prepares to open his latest artistic venture; Beasties: A Sci-Fi Rock Opera! This new show and its star-studded cast take to the stage on October 10th at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA!
We’ve been following the development of Beasties for quite some time – and to say I am counting down the minutes is an understatement. This rock opera promises to be out-of-this-world, both literally and figuratively.
Sohmers’ show includes poignant and timely themes as he toys with the idea of human nature through his creative characters – the “Beasties” – creatures who represent human emotions. These Beasties take on a corrupted and narcissistic alien political leader and bring us through a surrealist scape.
A Genre-Bending Experience
At the heart of Beasties is a fight against corporate corruption and environmental destruction. Our protagonist, Voice, and his band and the “good” Beasties, aim to unite humanity through the power of music, urging them to combat greed and save the planet.
Our story begins at a rock band’s performance in Central Park when the stage suddenly becomes the landing pad for an alien encounter! When stage manager, Gra, is taken over by an alien being, Impulse, the evil Dick T. Raitor quickly attempts to seize his opportunity to take over the show. Voice springs into action to save his performances and his crew, including the Beasties, must rally humanity to save the planet!
Sohmers delivers this dynamic plot through a soundtrack that fuses hard-hitting classic rock, slinky reggae beats, dazzling group numbers, and powerful rhythm-driven anthems. While the science fiction unfolds, a romantic subplot is brewing between Voice and Terra, bringing a personal touch into the struggle.
What Inspired the Ingenuity?
Beasties is certainly bringing a new meaning to rock operas, but his inspirations can be found in some of the most recognizable names in the genre, such as The Who’s Tommy or The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Much like these shows, Sohmers presents a powerful struggle between good and evil, giving his audience a framework to consider broader social issues.
Inspiration struck Gary Sohmers in the summer of 2016 when, as he would put it, “the world turned upside down and this giant narcissist was elected president.” Gary shared that, like many of us, he struggled with this news, and he found an outlet in his work.
He wrote nine songs that year for the show that is now known as Beasties, and pulled inspiration for his main character, Dick T. Raitor, from the reality he saw around him. While this show’s antagonist was inspired by a specific individual, Sohmers reminds us that he is meant to symbolize “any bumbling narcissistic autocratic”
Before this turn in political events, however, Beasties was already well in the works. Gary had written the first song of his soundtrack in the 70’s and began recording his work in 1980. Alongside Garbage’s guitarist and drummer, Steve Marker and Butch Vig, he recorded “Act 1” and “Dinosaur Rock.”
Over the years, he added to the work, until it took the shape of the Sci-Fi Rock Opera in 2016.
The Mind Behind the Music

You may be wondering what the background of such a prolific and creative writer looks like and – believe it or not – you’ve probably heard Gary Sohmer’s name before on your television set!
He is best known for his appearances as an appraiser on Antiques Road Show, where he demonstrates his knowledge of collectibles such as toys and pop-culture memorabilia. In addition to this, he is featured in radio shows nationwide and is a frequent lecturer at historical conventions, schools, antique shows, and more.
Sohmers’ journey to create Beasties is as eclectic as the production itself. From his early days in the ’70s, dreaming of being the next Bob Dylan, to his time managing bands and producing shows in Boston, Sohmers has lived a life surrounded by music and pop culture. This culmination is what brings us to today’s deeply poignant and creative, Beasties!
A Star-Studded Cast
As you now know, Gary certainly has an eye for value! And this came in handy when picking the perfect cast for this upcoming production of Beasties!
Barrence Whitfield, the dynamic vocalist of Barrence Whitfield and The Savages, reprises his role as Voice from the original Beasties record. In his first rendition, he was hailed for his powerful voice and stage presence. His trusty sidekick, Vibe, is presented by Cliff Goodwin, a legendary rock artist who has experience working with Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, American Standard, and so many more.
Their foe, Dick T. Raitor, is portrayed by Jerry Bisantz, an actor, singer, and playwright. Jerry is known for his long career in New England Theatre, performing in venues like Speakeasy Stage and The Publick Theater.
Female lead, Terra, is performed by the lovely Liz Proteau, who truly brings her character to life. The ensemble also features the voices of Lavon Fisher-Wilson, Bill Holloman, and composer Gary Sohmers!
Bill Holloman Jr. has been with Beasties since its early demos and now works as an arranger for composer Brian Keane. Alongside Mach Bell, Robb Simring on bass, and Dan Drohan on drums, this musical ensemble brings the world of the Beasties to life!
Looking Forward
Sohmers envisions a future for Beasties far beyond this world premiere. He has his goals set high, aligned with his inspirations, and hopes to take the show on tour. He also envisions an animated adaptation of the story, widening its audience and its impact. He especially hopes that his show’s anthems, such as “Dinosaur Rock” can include audience interaction and become staples in pop culture, much like the “Time Warp” in Rocky Horror.
A small-scale tour is already in the works for next summer, and discussions with a Broadway director are underway. I know I’ll be the first in line at the box office when the Beasties take on New York City!

The production’s blend of sci-fi and political allegory, along with personal and relatable, makes for a surreal yet compelling narrative. Sohmers hopes that the theme of individual responsibility in the face of a corrupt, larger system resonates with today’s audiences, encouraging them to reflect on their role in the fight for environmental and social justice.
With its immersive narrative, electrifying live performances, and relevant social commentary, Beasties promises to be an unforgettable rock opera that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Don’t miss out on the World Premiere of the newest theatre legend!
