The Wayne Miner Story
The story follows Wayne Miner, one of the many African American soldiers deliberately put at a disadvantage in the first World War. Played with raw intensity and passion by Alton Ray, we follow Wayne through his time in the barracks, where he and his roommates are denied resources, guidance, training, and even food.
Despite the blatant racism they are facing, Miner strives to fulfill his role in the Buffalo Soldier regiment, citing that he is not fighting for his president, but rather “fighting for me, my family, and for the America that I want America to be.”
Ultimately, Miner is one of the final soldiers to fall after courageously offering to bring ammunition to the front lines, where news of the armistice had not yet reached. His commitment to this fight outshines the darkness that he was surrounded with throughout his experience and serves as an inspiration to anyone who hearts the tale.
A Powerful, Tight Knit Cast
Alton Ray brings Miner’s struggles to life with intention and grace. But he is not the only star!
The ensemble cast includes talented actors from across the country who have honed their craft alongside Kenthedo Robinson and other elites, bringing them all the way to this moment.
Alton Ray and his costars James Oliver, Zsay Moore, and Sharell Williams previously worked together on Kenthedo’s recent ATA production, My Mamma: The Superaction Hero. In this show, Mamma Benjamin demands to be a part of her filmmaker son’s newest superhero movie, leading to a series of mishaps and emotional moments. This cast has perfected their dynamic, delivering powerful performances time after time.
Some of the cast even studied under the expert direction of Robinson, namely Shatique Brown, who studied with his director in 2017 at the Crystal Image Theater Company Theatre!
The cast brings their wealth of theatrical knowledge together to create a historical masterpiece, playing off of each other in ways that undeniably enhance the show. Together, they create a poignant retelling of Miner’s story, portraying friendship, resilience, and hope.
Alton’s Journey
For Alton Ray, playing Wayne Miner has been a journey of growth and introspection. This is his fourth time being involved in The Buffalo Hero and his third time portraying Miner.
“As I grow as a person, my views on the play and character grow as well,” Ray says. The character of Miner, driven by his persistent hope, resonates deeply with Ray, reflecting his own experience when he first moved to New York City to pursue acting.
He also took time to ensure he was prepared for the role. Alton tells us that he drew from historical resources including films, book, and speeches by and about figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Frederick Douglass. These pieces serve as a way to get into the mental space of his character.
Beyond his historical research, his eye for detail drove him to study soldiers’ experiences with PTSD and the initial shock of war. The depth of his investigation translates on stage into a moving portrayal of a young man whose bravery and loyalty stood tall in the face of prejudice.
Working with Kenthedo Robinson
Director Kenthedo Robinson has spent years researching this story. He believes that Wayne Miner’s story is a forgotten one that deserves to be told, like so many others. His dedication is palpable in every line and scene.
For Alton Ray, Robinson is a guiding force. He confided in us that he considered Robinson to be “a theater father,” who is committed to his connection with his cast just as much as he is to his show. His leadership shines through this cast as they dazzle on stage.
Previous renditions of Kenthedo’s show has received rave reviews, with critics hailing their strong performances, fighting choreography, and immersive soundtrack. Jim Catapano tells us that we will surely be transported straight to the 1918 battlefield as we watch Wayne’s story come to life.
Not only is the story touching, but it is also educational and relevant. Wayne Miner’s life is a testament to the often-overlooked contributions of Black soldiers and the sacrifices made in the name of their future.
