Ken Coughlin Brings a Double One-Act Event to The American Theatre of Actors!
The American Theatre of Actors (ATA) is set to present a unique two-act event on the famous Sargent Stage, showcasing the work of one of its own: Ken Coughlin.

Opening in just a few days, you’ll be able to catch his two newest works between October 23rd and November 3rd at the cozy midtown theater, known for its commitment to uplifting new writers, directors, and actors.
Ken Coughlin is a longtime friend of ATA, having been involved in a number of productions as an on-stage performer while growing in his roles backstage as a writer and director. Most recently, Ken directed a two-week run of Shakespeare’s Macbeth,
Working alongside Coughlin on this project is the ever-talented Laurie Rae Waugh. Laurie takes on the role of director for the first half of the evening; presenting us with “Hang Up Your Cleats,” the intriguing story of a father and son who see a group of baseball players through the realization that the end of their careers is approaching.
Following intermission, “The Next Audition” takes over the stage! For this half of the production, Coughlin takes on the dual role of writer and director, presenting a raw look inside the mind of an artist. Our main character, a career guitarist, is internally struggling with the decision to pursue another audition or not. Suffice to say, the theater lovers among us can relate to the feeling.
Laurie & Ken’s Long Time Coming Collaboration
Laurie and Ken have worked together for many years on a variety of projects. Ken tells us that their first meeting actually looked similar to their current production; Both found themselves directors of one-acts at ATA running around the same time!
“We have directed each other in many productions, and have a profound respect for each other’s talent,” Ken says. “ I trusted Laurie to properly cast the show, and I trust her to get the most out of her actors and my words.”
More importantly, Ken recognizes the value of peer review – especially in the theatre! He tells us he “wanted another set of eyes to see if my words could be interpreted in a way other than what I had intended.”
“I have also had the experience of working with playwrights who have directed their own work, and I understand some of the issues that arise. I’m not so arrogant to think I could completely avoid those issues.”
Despite the challenges of directing your own work – Ken assures us that he has some tricks up his sleeve for The Next Audition!
“You may be saying to yourself… ‘aren’t you contradicting yourself?’ To that, I say, you have to know something about me, which I can’t relate here, without giving away the play. You’ll just have to come and see for yourself.”
A Theatrical Experience
Coughlin’s choice to present Hang Up Your Cleats and The Next Audition together is deliberate, as he’s noted a thematic thread between the two stories.
“In their own way, both deal with performance conflicts, but the way they are presented and dealt with are very different,” he tells us. While Hang Up Your Cleats navigates the transition from one career to another, The Next Audition focuses on the uncertainty of pursuing the next opportunity. Despite the stark contrast in context, the feelings are similar, a testament to the universal nature of human emotion.
This double feature will be brought to life by a talented cast, including notable names such as Will Allen, Aileen Bergin, Daniel Dennehy, Kevin Ford, Sonia Halle, Thomas J. Kane, Julianne Lorndale, Luc Mitchell, Dennis Mullikin, Phil Oetiker, Valerie O’Hara, Brian Michael O’Neill, and Jacob Ward.
Two notable members of Ken’s The Next Audition team are Valerie O’Hara and Thomas J. Kane, both of whom have worked alongside him for over a decade. Their presence brings an added layer of camaraderie and strategy to the production, with Coughlin noting, “The roles were written with them in mind… I have acted with and directed both of them numerous times, and they always bring so much to the stage.”
Coughlin’s Future: A Busy Path Ahead
As Coughlin wraps up this unique double-act event, his calendar remains full. With three additional productions lined up through February, he is showing no signs of slowing down soon. His true passion for the spirit of theatre is what keeps him motivated throughout this prolific career; “I hope the audience will be entertained,” he says, leaving room for each viewer’s interpretation. “I’ll rely on their reactions to know if I’ve done what I set out to do.”
The American Theatre of Actors, founded close to 50 years ago, has long been a home for emerging writers, directors, and actors. Laurie and Ken have been a part of this mission for many years, and truly understand the value of bringing fresh stories and new approaches to the theater. With their experienced and nuanced approach, Hang Up Your Cleats and The Next Audition is a do not miss!
