The New York independent theatre landscape is bracing for a major summer renaissance. John Chatterton, a foundational trailblazer of the off-off-Broadway movement, has officially announced the grand return of the Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) from June 15 through July 26, 2026. This relaunch marks the return of a true “Festival Giant” after a nearly decade-long hiatus.

To spearhead this historic undertaking, Chatterton has partnered with JMGC to manage promotion, brand strategy, and press visibility. Operating out of the historic three-theatre complex at the American Theatre of Actors (ATA)—which is concurrently celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary—MITF 2026 is positioning itself as a massive, multi-stage hub of creative innovation.

Among an eclectic array of world-premiere works and high-concept programming, festival producers have unveiled a premier centerpiece of the opening week: Across a Crowded Room, a captivating romantic drama by celebrated playwright F.J. Hartland. Presented in partnership with Break A Leg Productions, this intimate, deeply moving production will run for three exclusive performances on June 16, 18, and 20, 2026, at 6:00 PM.

Retelling a Lifetime in an Intimate Space

Written with trademark poignancy by F.J. Hartland, Across a Crowded Room wrestles with the profound, universal mysteries of human connection and lifelong commitment. The narrative charts the sweeping, decades-long trajectory of a single marriage, asking two fundamental questions that echo across generations:

  1. How do you know at first sight that a person is the one for you?
  2. If you had the chance, knowing all the hardships ahead, would you do it all again?

“Across a Crowded Room hits at the absolute core of what independent theatre does best,” says festival representative Jay Michaels. “It takes a massive, life-spanning human question and drops it into an intimate space where the audience can feel every beat of the performers’ hearts.”

Directing through the Lens of Real-Life Magic

To transform Hartland’s text into an authentic exploration of love, endurance, and memory, acclaimed director, coach, and industry veteran Valerie Adami-Juhlin leaned heavily on a classic theatrical maxim: 90% of directing is casting.

Adami-Juhlin struck artistic gold by casting seasoned New York stage actors Anne Pasquale and Keith Herron to portray the central couple. The extraordinary wildcard? Pasquale and Herron are actually married in real life.

While Adami-Juhlin had previously collaborated with both actors separately on different projects, bringing them together on stage created an immediate, shorthand creative chemistry. The couple infuses the fictional text with the real, unteachable weight of their own shared life experiences, history, and mutual devotion.

“A marriage is for better and for worse,” notes Adami-Juhlin. “If you’re not willing to make that commitment, you rock the whole foundation of the relationship. It may only take a moment to discover an instant attraction, but a marriage is a lifetime of sharing every emotion with someone, and being better because of it. Together, Anne and Keith are magic.”

The Vital Energy of the Festival Circuit

For Break A Leg Productions and the creative team behind Across a Crowded Room, launching this intimate piece within the framework of the MITF revival is a deeply symbolic homecoming. Independent theater festivals provide an indispensable lifeline to the New York cultural fabric, offering a fertile testing ground where new scripts can find their feet and actors are given the rare, defining opportunity to originate roles from scratch.

“All of us at Break A Leg Productions are delighted to participate in the MITF,” Adami-Juhlin shares. “The festivals offer so many opportunities for new works and new playwrights as well as opportunities for actors to originate roles. That’s what the NY theater scene is all about.”
